In 1977, a rug dealer and writer named Georges Izmidlian wrote:
‘In countries where an informed body of opinion has grown up on the subject of oriental rugs, a distinction is drawn between those from Persia, Turkey, Afghanistan and Russia, and those from other areas which produce similar goods. Only the former are entitled to be described as real oriental rugs.’
Pakistan and India arguably have contributed more to the rug revolution than any country except Turkey. A few people have even realized that if no one has ever heard of an antique Pakistani rug, it may be because Pakistan didn’t exist until after World War II. Until then it was part of India. Some of history’s greatest carpets were woven in Lahore, produced for the Mughal court in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Lahore city is located in north-east of Punjab Province, Pakistan. It's a traditionally rich and beautiful city and enjoys a rich cultural heritage since the days of Mughal Dynasty and is the biggest dry port in Pakistan with easy land and air traffic for its overall operation. Carpets Produced in Lahore city, with their traditional Mughal, Pak Persian and Caucasian designs, are one of the traditional export commodities as well as famous works of arts. As a base area of carpets in Pakistan, Lahore is rich in Wool of native origin, and all the different varieties of carpets are made by hand.
Many Pakistani designs are developed from Persian styles, with a majority lending inspiration from Tabriz. Other popular Oriental styles emulated include Turkoman and Bokhara, distinctive by the ‘gul’ motifs. Rugs from Pakistan are of good quality and are most often more affordable than an original Persian carpet.
