Natural rugs certainly have acquired a unique place in home decor over a long period of time. It is the fastest way to change the mood, or the theme of a room, besides adding a sparkle of warmth and charm to the place. As natural materials are used to produce such rugs, they are eco-friendly; besides, non-toxicity is an advantage of using the natural rugs in general. Moreover, they help to absorb the noise level.

Natural materials such as bamboo, coir, hemp, jute, mountain grass, sisal, sea grass, paper and wool can be used for the manufacture of natural rugs. Now we will have an insight into a few types of natural rugs available and their distinct characteristics.

Bamboo rugs are more commonly used in the Asian countries. They are hand woven by using thin bamboo strips; however, other natural materials such as jute can be mixed. Bamboo rugs show natural variations in their colours without adding any dyes. Thus, these natural colours are very durable, though bamboo rugs should not be exposed to direct sunlight for a long period of time as this will cause their natural colour to fade away. Furthermore, they are easy to clean.

Wool certainly has the most fundamental qualities. Wool wears longer than any other natural material and this obviously tops the list of its qualities. Wool dyes wonderfully, giving the rug a genuine look. Given that wool is water repellent, fire resistant, and naturally elastic, plus it resists dirt, makes it ideal to use.

Other than bamboo and wool, we have jute which is the finest and the softest of the natural materials, thus is not a very practical material to be used. In addition, sea grass is the cheapest of the natural materials for rug making.
